St. Peter of Canterbury

Peter was a monk from Rome's Benedictine abbey of Saint Andrew who accompanied Saint Augustine of Canterbury on his missionary journey to England in 597. When subsequently Augustine sought to inform Pope Saint Gregory the Great of the success of their mission and to ask the pope's counsel on certain matters, he chose Peter as one of two monks to carry his letter to Rome. Peter became the first abbot of the Canterbury monastery now known as Saint Augustine's Abbey. He later drowned off the coast of France, where the locals, not knowing his identity, buried him without honor. But the appearance of an unexplained light over his grave on a nightly basis led the people to inquire who he was, after which his body was transferred to a church in Boulogne.
