Diego was the son of Vicenzo Oddi and Bernardina Pasquali; raised in a poor but pious farm family. He had little education, but learned as much about the faith as he could. At age 20, he felt a call to the religious life, but his family strongly objected. He met Blessed Mariano da Roccacasale while making a pilgrimage to Rome, and was inspired by his example to become a Franciscan lay brother. He spent the rest of his life in the same monastery, known for his life of simple service, his sunny temperament, and his obvious deep faith.
